About Chief Charles Belgie, Jr., Fire Chief and Fire Marshall of over 35 years, will be remembered as a wonderful father and uncle, a veteran, a vital member of Moon Township and a friend to all. A man who set standards for Moon Township Emergency Services. Chief Belgie passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Allegheny General Hospital at the age of 88. He was born in Pittsburgh on March 18, 1930 to the late Blanche (Bernard) and Charles Belgie, Sr. On September 5, 2013, he was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Gloria Jane (Merriman) Belgie. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Lary W. Belgie, sisters Dorothy Della and Helen Faye Dunmire and his brother Alfred Belgie. He is the beloved father of Gary Belgie and Jimmy Belgie; loving grandfather of Zach Belgie (Maggie); proud great grandfather of Katie Jane Belgie. Chief Belgie’s career in the fire service spanned 73 years. He rose through the ranks of the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Dept. walking in his Dad’s footsteps. He began as a fire fighter moving to assistant chief and then became Chief when his Dad retired. He held the titles of Fire Chief, Fire Marshall and Arson Inspector for 35 years. He had a selfless nature and patience to teach. Charlie was a father figure, mentor and a leader to many of the younger fireman. He slowly built up the Department to what it is today. Charlie joined the US. Navy and served during the Koran War and received a commendation for duty in a combat zone and a good conduct medal. After the war, he took the position of lineman for Bell Telephone. Later he became an installer of PBX equipment with AT&T. Upon retirement, he continued his public service as Emergency Management Coordinator for the Township of Moon. Charlie was a member of the Fire Department Instructors Conference, Tri-State Seminars, the National Fire Academy in Maryland, Allegheny County Fire Chief’s Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs and Ohio Valley Fireman’s Association. He also was a member of the Red Knights Motor Cycle Club, Patriot Guard Riders Motor Cycle Club, Tin Can Sailors Association, PA Fire and Emergency Services Institute. He loved Moon Township and was the driving force for the 911 Memorial and Memorial Garden. He was well respected for his knowledge and involvement. Visitation Thursday 6-8 and Friday 2-4 6-8 at Copeland’s Moon Township, 981 Brodhead Rd. Further visitation on Saturday at the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Department, PSB 1000 Beaver Grade Road from 12 Noon until time of service at 1 PM. Cavalcade will process to Sharon Cemetery for the committal. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations in his name to The Childhood Leukemia Foundation.
